Barkers Trading Post & Auction
Walking around Maybee, Michigan on a little photo expedition, we happened across Barker's Trading Post and Auction. They open on occasion for actions, but we were given a private viewing of a few items in their shop as they started to prepare for another auction that following week. This place was a treasure chest and we'll be back to check out one of their auctions as time permits.
Lumber in the Shrubs
Lawrence of Berkley and I decided to make a short morning run out to Carleton, Michigan for some photo action. It wasn't the best lighting, but we had a blast anyhow.
Nutmeg Lounging in Her New Condo
We came home tonight with a new cat tower for the kids. Despite their initial shock at the large (its not really large, about the size of a night table) they quickly took to their new toy and played with it all night. Nutmeg (the younger and larger of the two) we'd expected to curl up inside the tower. Though she did for a time, she preferred hanging out on the "balcony." I pulled out the D700 and cranked up the ISO. It was truly amazing -- I got usable shots at ISO 3200!

Whirl-Wind
Walking around Maybee, Michigan on a little photo expedition, we happened across Barker's Trading Post and Auction. One of theÊProprietors notices us walking around outside checking out their buildings and invited us in to check out their auction barn. What a treasure! This Whirl-Wind fan was one of many in their barn which they're still using.
Silo Access
A couple of buddies and I headed to Maybee, Michigan for a morning of shooting. The Maybee Farmers Co-Op's grain elevator really caught our attention and we spent more than an hour walking around it capturing its various features.

Measuring Up
Walking around Maybee, Michigan on a little photo expedition, we happened across Barker's Trading Post and Auction. One of theÊProprietors notices us walking around outside checking out their buildings and invited us in to check out their auction barn. I cranked the ISO to 1600 on the D700 for its first real test at higher speeds. While I should have spent more timing working these fun yard sticks, the results of these high ISO photos are stunning. I'm glad to know that I'll be able to push that ISO setting at least to 1600 and get images measuring up to my expectation for printing.

Ready For Take-Off
A couple of buddies and I headed to Maybee, Michigan for a morning of shooting. The Maybee Farmers Co-Op's grain elevator really caught our attention and we spent more than an hour walking around it capturing its various features. This seemed to me like a scene from an old Sci-Fi story.
An IR Bloom
I had my damaged D2X (the low pass filter was scratched somehow during a shoot) converted to an IR only camera. I took it out for the first sets of photos at a local shopping center frequented by geese. None of these were intended to be great images, but they were a first test of the camera and my first IR shots. I promised to post some early photos so my buddies could check out the D2X as an IR camera, so these are for them.
Boat Launch Tide
I started my afternoon trip to the Blue Water region with a visit to the Marysville boat launch. There wasn't much activity, but the wooden ramp with its steel plates was pretty intriguing. For this one, I sat on the dock with the D300 and 70-200VR just pointing down, waiting for the wake of the pleasure crafts to roll over.
Strolling Black-Crowned Night-Heron
Adalay and I took an evening break and headed for the Detroit Zoo for an adults only event. The first event of the evening was to have been feeding of the Polar Bears, so we made our way back to their exhibit. Unfortunately the Polar Bears were inside enjoying their air conditioning while the Black-Crowned Night-Herons took over the exhibit. Odd. I didn't think these guys liked arctic weather.
American Mariner, the Wedding Party, and the Photographer
I decided to make a run up to Port Huron for a little shooting with the D700. There wasn't much happening, but I did have the chance to pop-off a full 4GB card of three-frame bracket sweeps.
I stopped by the Lightship Huron in time for the American Mariner to start its turn before the Blue Water Bridge. So I hung out playing with the cameras and lenses as the ship made its way by me. The oddest thing though was that this wedding party and their Photographer walked up behind me and started shooting against the backdrop of the Blue Water Bridge.

The Three Musketeers
Four of us (Adalay, DNO_Dennis, Lawrence of Berkley, and I) headed over to Kensington Metropark to do some shooting of the birds at the Nature Center. As we pulled in these three young Sandhill Cranes were walking around one of the picnic areas. With an opportunity to shoot this close we had to stop. We're pretty sure that these were the same babies we'd caught a couple times last year.

Day Lilly
Adalay and I took an evening break and headed for the Detroit Zoo for an adults only event. As we made our we to the Polar Bear exhibit, we stopped by the garden to enjoy the flowers.
Great Egret in Flight
Lawrence of Berkley and I decided to make a little photo expedition Saturday night to the wetlands in the shadow of the American Center in Southfield, Michigan. Its a nice little park with a boardwalk curving through the water, cattails, and reeds providing for a nice little oasis from the urban sprawl. This Great Egret also seemed to enjoy the park as we caught him strolling through the waters hunting for dinner.
